Department of Heavy Industries (DHI)

The Department of Heavy Industry (DHI) is working under the Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises, Government of India with the vision to provide India a modern, healthy and robust Auto, Heavy Engineering, Heavy Electrical & Capital Goods Sectors and Self-reliant & growth oriented Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSE).

 Main functions of DHI:

  • Promotion of Engineering Industry viz. machine tools, heavy electrical, industrial machinery and auto industry.
  • Administration of operating CPSEs and autonomous organizations under the department. CPSEs are engaged in manufacture a wide range of products Boilers, Gas/Steam/ hydro turbines, industrial machinery, turbo generators, three wheelers, tractors and consumer products such as paper, salt, tyres and watches
  • Caters to the requirements of equipment for basic industries such as steel, non-ferrous metals, power, fertilizers, refineries, petrochemicals, shipping, paper, cement, sugar, etc. 
  • Supports the development of a range of intermediate engineering products like castings, forgings, diesel engines, industrial gears and gear boxes.
  • Maintains a constant dialogue with Industry Associations and encourages initiatives for growth of industry.
  • Assists the industry in achieving their growth plans through support for policy initiatives, suitable interventions for restructuring of tariffs and trade, promotion of technological collaboration and up-gradation, and research & development activities etc. 

Quality Control of Steel Tubes - Mandatory Certification:

DHI through its “Mild Steel Tubes (excluding seamless tube & tubes according to API Specification) (Quality Control) order,1978” and Amendment Order, 1983 G.S.R. No. 374(E) dated 18-07-1978 brought following 3 steel tubes under Mandatory Certification of Bureau of Indian Standards:

(I) Steel tubes for structural purpose as per IS 1161

(II) Steel tubes, Tubular and other wrought steel fittings – Part 1: Steel tubes as per IS 1239 (Part 1)

(III)Steel tubes for water-wells (Upto 200 mm Dia) as per IS 4270
